Seeraga Samba rice is a gluten-free white rice, which is a seasonal product. It is a very high quality rice that can easily compete with the Basmati rice.

The rice is normally available until August. After this we have to wait until about January before the rice will be available again.

The Seeraga Samba rice is an ancient mystical rice with a delicious taste and aroma. It is therefore one of the most expensive rice varieties from South India because cultivation requires a lot of pampering in the field and the yield is sparing.

This small rice variety gets its name from its resemblance to cumin, which is known as Seeragam in Tamilnadu.

When cooked properly, these grains are fluffy and loose. It is an ideal rice for preparing Biryani. It absorbs the flavor of the masala rather than giving the dish a strong flavor like basmathi rice does. Seeraga Samba is also known as Kaima rice and Jeerasal.

Storage advice

Keep in a cool, dark and dry place. After opening, transfer the contents to an airtight container.

Preparation

For best results, it is advisable to soak the rice in water for 5 minutes to 10 minutes before use, but this is not necessary. Rinse the rice before cooking.
Bring the rice to a boil in a pan with double the amount of water. Then let it simmer with the lid on the pan for about 20 minutes. Once it has absorbed most of the water, remove the pan from the heat and let it rest with the lid on for about 5 minutes.
